Matriclysm: The Heart of the Ocean

Heart of the Ocean is the penultimate image of the installation: a 2.5-meter sculpture laced with color-changing light-emitting diodes, whose patterns present  real-time ocean data fed to the work in 12-minute cycles. With a form that recalls a bodily organ, a chrysalis, or even a three-dimensional abstraction of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, the sculpture’s luminous patterns and also converts oceanic conditions into an original sound vocabulary, modeled and voiced by Jewel. Jewel collaborated with Chelle Gentemann (NASA IPA) and Greg Niemeyer (UC Berkeley) on the scientific data behind this piece.
