My Mission

Music has always been a source of healing and inspiration for me. From homeless to happiness, my lyrics helped me shatter depression and learn to know what love is. My hope is that anyone who is struggling in darkness seeking to know their light might be helped by witnessing what I have gone through. I want my music and content to be about the people I meet, with their challenges and real life solutions, along with the universal principles that will make our world a better place.

There was a time when I wouldn’t have known this! Very early on in my career- I went into the famed Cherokee studios and made a demo of about 30-50 of my songs. That demo made it around Hollywood, as excited A&R’s and label folks and managers shared it. (This is after I was signed with @atlanticrecords , but before I made a record). There was a member of a super huge world famous band I respected who had heard my demos and he commented to my manager who shared them that “they were not real songs.” (It was songs like Painters and Near You Always and who will save your soul and His Pleasure Is My Pain.) I remember really wanting his approval. Later that year, I was out at a function and I see him - and I really wanted to impress him and connect somehow. He is standing in front of me w a drink in his hand, and a song comes on- Ruby Tuesday, and to strike up a conversation I say “I love the Beatles!” #He just looked at me with a quizzical bemused stare. I caught on that I must have gotten it wrong. lol 🙄🤦‍♀️ I wasn’t raised listening to music in Alaska, other than what my dad sang in our sets. I knew a lot of great songs like Brown Eyed Girl, Peacful Easy Feeling, The Rose, Heart Break Hotel, but I never knew or heard the artist who made it famous. Only my dad. It took me years after coming down to the Lower 48 to get a small grasp on pop culture. @stevepoltz used to have what he called Music 101 For Jewel. He would sit me down and play Big Star and Harry Nilsson and explain the difference between McCartney and Lennon.... im still not who you want on a pop culture trivia game- but I’m a lot better than I was! Good enough to get this meme, at least!
