Dancing and Lullabies

Dancing and Lullabies

Ok, my feet are better... not better, but I'm used to them. Maybe I don't notice it anymore because my knees hurt so badly! I guess suddenly going from no dancing to 8 hour days was a bit much!  Typical of me, I always rush in and get obsessed and over do something!  Man, I can hardly walk tonight! I'm absolutely crippled, haha!  I hope they get better fast. It's just so much fun to learn, and the day just flies by. I keep thinking, ok, one more time. Ok, one more time. I really feel lucky to have such a good partner. He has spent his whole life learning to be great at this, and its really something to watch him dance- WITHOUT ME!

He seriously is sooooo much better without me clinging to him for dear life. But we have such a good time, we laugh ALL DAY LONG! It's more fun than I ever could have imagined. Plus, I just really love to learn and challenge myself. I never watched Dancing With the Stars until they sent me last season in the mail when I signed on to the show; and I can say, being in it is pretty cool so far. A chance to learn something from a world class teacher is a rare gift and learning really makes me feel alive. It really sharpens my senses and makes me feel at my best when I push myself. Learning is such an invigorating and humbling experience. I think I'm a learning junkie...it reminds me of all the other stuff I want to learn and all the books I have yet to read. (Oh, I've been reading Rilke's love poems- WOW!!!!)

And I'm glad some of you remember Dmitry from 'So You Think You Can Dance,' he really is as nice a person on the inside as out. That's what makes being his partner such a privilege. Maybe if you guys would like, I will ask him to write you guys a blog about our time together.

Today Ty and his partner stopped by at the end of our work out. His partner, Chelsea, danced with Dmitry and they looked SO good! Me and Ty still look like buffoons... but, what else can we do? That's why I'm rehearsing so hard, if I still suck at the end of it I will know its not because I didn't put the effort in.  Dmitry has a great work ethic. It's been fun to select songs and pick themes for our dances and how we want to dress... it's like a mini-production. He really puts a lot of thought and care into it.

One day we rehearsed in Dublin, a small town up the road from us. It was in an amazing old rock building, over 100 years old; with beautiful huge windows, it was lovely. We started learning the Quick Step, and its the opposite of the Cha Cha, all posture, nothing slinky. It's so hard to switch gears. I got to watch Ty work on his routine with Chelsea one day, so I'm including pictures of that too... and a pic of Chelsea, who is so cute. She's from Salt Lake City and is a super nice girl, very talented. She was raised well and very down to earth- not a diva!

Oh, and Ty is kinda shy around cameras, as some of you noted. Not in person or around friends, he's actually quite hysterical and very entertaining and funny. But,  the 'cowboy code' is not to brag or draw too much attention to yourself, so 'turning on' in front of cameras has never been his thing. He is very authentic and that's what I love about him. He has certainly been giving his all to dancing and is trying very hard, and i hope his personality comes across, because he is so funny. He has a very dry sense of humor and this dancing is REALLY out of his element! His whole career has been about being tight and strong- and dancing takes being loose, it's quite a change!

On a different note, the lullaby album cover is almost finished and soon it will go into production to be printed and everything. The sequence order is as follows:

        RAVEN                                              4:08
        ALL THE ANIMALS                               2:46
        SWEET DREAMS                                  4:17
        TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR           3:05
        CIRCLE SONG                                    3:47
        THE COWBOS LAMENT                         4:00
        DAYDREAM LAND                                3:11
        SOV GOTT (SLEEP WELL)                     4:44
        DREAMER                                          4:23
        FOREVER AND A DAY                           3:16
        GLORIA                                             6:10
        SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW         4:26
        ANGEL STANDING BY                            2:46
        SIMPLE GIFTS                                     2:48
        BRAHMS LULLABY                                4:46

I'm excited about rare or forgotten verses I found (with Alan Bershaw's help!) to several of the standards like Twinkle,  and an intro to Somewhere Over the Rainbow written by the original writers I had never heard, and LOTS of verses to  Brahms lullaby. I also lengthened the arrangements of some songs I wrote, like Gloria (which was very short on my Christmas album) and SOV GOTT- the Swedish song. Oh, speaking of the Swedish song... I wrote this when I was 18... I had just learned about 12 words in Swedish, and decided to string them all together. It's about a dolphin and a wolf that fall in love and sing to each other at the shore line every night. They say they love each other and to sleep well... its the best i could do with the limited vocabulary I had, but there it is!
Oh, The Shape of You didn't make the album because its kind of a sad song. But, it will be on one soon, it's one of my favorite songs I have right now. This album isn't quite as bare as Pieces of You; it has more strings, but is still very organic and raw. No drums, just cello, violin, mandolin and my guitar... with an accordion here and there. I think it will make you all happy. One musician played all the strings and mandolin parts, Jonathan Yudkin. He's so talented and did a great job. My friend Jason Freese helped produce it with me and played piano on a few tracks.
Anyway, talk to you all soon. Thanks for all  of your support. I enjoy reading your posts and am always fascinated by your writing.  My condolences for the lost kitty, losing a pet is so hard. It tears your heart out, but the love they give is irreplaceable, a true gift! xxj

My beautiful star child what words are their that can possibly convey my love and respect for you?
Thank you for opening your world to us and writing so frequently, this is so special and magical. Your such an inspiration!
When i read about your dancing with the stars expereince i can sense the birth of a jewel song in the womb of your heart. You always wrote about unique things and other peoples perspectives that always fasinated me about you.
You seem to write about things that few tend to do. This surly has alchemized you into the Jewel you are as it birthes compassion and understanding imagination being more important then knowledge in that it puts you in the shoes of others you can understand what it might be like to be them thus healing ensues. You light my fuse oh my darling muse. Again i am so proud of you!! I have shared my fave song lyrics of yours on my website with the world.
I am so excited about this album
lots of new songs and they are long at that
Yeah
I luv U!

I also happy to see your mind is a kind home, and that your not so hard onself anymore. That your sense of learning innerchild innocents is still in tact.
I recall Dimitri from so you think you can dance, he had an aura about him i was drawn to, he was my favorite.
Yes please have him share a blog about his time dancing with you.
Do not worry if you suck it has always been your passion that has made you so apealing
I am also really proud of Ty for doing something new that is really neat.
Thank you sweetie for the comfort about loseing my kitty. That was real sweet and unexpected. I love how you give subtle hint that your reading my heart flow directed at you. That spins me into an excitment beyond words.
It makes me feel that your not so far away and hard to reach after all.
This new cd feels like it will be a merging of the dream and waking life.
Hey sweetie if you get a chance you should look up a song by Natasha Bedingfield called Pirate Bones it reminds me so much of you.
jessicamystic | February 24, 2009
Jewell, first thanks for posting the blog. I hope you and Ty both do well. It is so nice to know a little about how you are doing. I can't wait for the new album. I love who you are and what you do. Robert

I love your posts! I get so happy when I see a new one! That would be so awesome if Dmitry wrote a little something! I love the pictures too! The cha cha and the quickstep so far? I love those dances! That quickstep is something else though. So many steps!!! I'm glad you're having fun learning. :)
And yaaaaay, a track listing. I am way too anxious!! I didn't think you actually read these comments lol! I'm happy you do. Just remember, your "soulja boy" teachers are wishing you luck on the show!!!!

PS. Go Alan, for finding those forgotten verses! :D

i have always loved your circle song by the way.. i find it very enlightened

jessicamystic | February 24, 2009
I have to clairfy this thought....
Do not worry if you suck it has always been your passion that has made you so apealing...
By which i mean you are also super talented to, it is a combo of your talent, passion, huge heart and sense of artist adventurist and play oh and your way with articulation as well that has us all so drawn to you
I could go on about all the qualities i love about u but that might take too long. Besides others need to write stuff to.
jessicamystic | February 24, 2009
Jewel!!!! I LOVE these blogs about your dancing.....now you know how hard it is, and just how much us dancers have to go through!! I told you! haha. It'd be awesome if you got Dmitry to write a blog - he is such an amazing dancer :)

Thanks for another post. I am interested to see Ty in this environment because he seems very serious and not flashy at all. I know he has to be awesome to be with you though.
Your poor body! I'm glad you both like your partners. I agree it's great to learn and try something new. It will probably teach you a lot.
I love your music best when it's simple and raw, so looking forward to the lullaby album.
Thanks for sharing with us, Jewel because we are all big fans of yours. Good luck with the dancing!!!
goofgal | February 24, 2009

I'm very excited for your new lullaby album!!! All the animals is one of my all-time favorites. It was one of the first songs I thought myself on guitar in open D.
I'm so glad you decided to add more strings to your songs this time around. The 7 you included on your latest DVD (accompanied by the live chamber orchestra) are incredible. I especially loved your rendition of "Anything Goes". I'd love for you to release an album with the classic songs you cover at your concerts!

Hi Jewel,
It's so nice that you read the posts and know about Tara's kitty that passed away.
I think your Lulluby album will be great to play to your future cowboy and cowgirl babies!
If you are feeling way too humbled dancing with Dimitry, just ask him to sing. That should make you feel better!
You inspired me to do my dream since I was 16 and go out and perform my own songs. For the first time I performed at a homeless shelter and nursing home! Next, I will find a coffee shop to play at every week like Steve Poltz told you to do! Thanks for inspiring me!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe I finally did it!!! I'm 49 years old!!!

Jewel,
You are the BEST! Thank you for all you share, you support us also, more then you can imagine...
*
You are so sweet to mention my Kitty. You would have loved him. He was so sweet, looking into your eyes and not looking away. He was a "Healing Kitty".
*
I gather we are all healers as we follow our passions. I work as an acupuncturist and MANY of my patients know how much I enjoy you (including one very sweet New England Patriots football player). They are coming in for their appointments so excited to tell me: "Guess who is going to be on DWTS?" I am like ah, yeah I know...and her husband is too! Then I tell them about Ty. Too funny!

I am so excited that you are making a lullaby CD. The content in your CDs often match where I am in life, and I am expecting my first baby right now- so a lullaby CD by Jewel is exactly what I'm going to need. :)
Best of luck on Dancing with the Stars- I've already got in programmed into my Tivo. Take care.

I saw a clip of you singing St. Louis Blues with Jools Holland back in 1998, love the version, would you ever put that on one of your albums? I am am huge St Louis Blues hockey fan, and they should use your version for thier theme song!

I'm so excited about the new album and can't wait to hear Brahms Lullaby! I sang that in choir when I was in college. And Angel Standing By has always been one of my favorites.
I've also never watched Dancing With the Stars, but will definitely be tuning in!

Jewel,
I cannot wait for this lullaby album. I am getting several for the new mommies in my life. Good luck on DWTS !!! I can't wait to see you bust a move!
ColorMeFabulous | February 25, 2009
Wow, that sounds great. I hope your dancing goes well and the tracks for the album seem awesome! Cant wait to hear them, and can't wait to see you on DWTS.
BelindaH | February 25, 2009
Talking about huge and great windows in Dublin where you rehearsed your dance steps, your blogs are like windows that are always grand to me. I can even see, feel and almost touch you as you have touched my life. You are very good in sketching personality, Dimitry and Chelsea seem to be nice people to me now. And of course Ty,whom I had an impression, a very so-so serious cowboy person can be that funny and hysterical at times. Now I know why he is so special to you. These people are gifts to you because you are also to them. You attract nice people because you are.
The 15 songs in sequence on your lullaby album will surely a "must buy" for every authentic Jewel fan. You always keep me riding along with your lines and everything about you. Take care.

Drink plenty of Dublin 10-2-4 DP and it will make everything so much better. Great stuff! I am proud to call you a fellow Texan!
jringo | February 27, 2009
Yes!
He can even write in Ruuusssshian!
But it would be nice to read it in American.
Thanks for the confirmation on a lovely man.
We also like Miss Chelsea; it could be fun to hear what she thinks of her world class athlete learning to shake it.
When I see "lullabye" I think of that beautiful old Irish Lullabye that Bing Crosby sings and think that your beautiful voice would be historical.
Perhaps you could do that commercial thing even and get the rights to a clip to sing with Bing?
Thanks for another confirmation that your guy is also a lovely man.
Have the wardrobe people bedazzle some standard knee wraps for you for your live performance. It's amazing what a little support will do for the old (I'm sorry) joints.
You do good work, thanks and best wishes.
