The Alaska Concerts & Setlists!

The Alaska Concerts & Setlists!

Hi All,

Since quite a few of you requested them, I thought I’d post the three most recent setlists from Jewel’s recent return to Alaska between Dave and Brianna’s “Almost Famous” blogs for the two Anchorage concerts. For those of you interested in these things, every 2009 setlist is now available here on the site by navigating to the Library and clicking "set lists." (Scroll all the way down for the most recent which now continue on a second page.) Otherwise, here’s a condensed summary of the Alaska concerts and those setlists.

The first of the three concerts took place on August 19th, when Jewel performed a special benefit for the Bunnell Street Arts Center's Artists in the School program at the Mariner Theatre in her home town of Homer, Alaska. Surrounded by friends and family, this night was special for obvious reasons, but it was also particularly meaningful for Jewel as the last time she played at The Mariner was for her own Interlochen Tuition Benefit back on July 25, 1989, essentially her first solo performance when she was 15 years old! Jewel had received a partial scholarship to Interlochen but it was the support of her hometown at this 1989 concert that helped raise the remaining tuition and expenses required to actually send her on her way. Returning to this theater 20 years later was a perfect opportunity for Jewel to give back to the same community that helped her, as the Artists in the School program, for which this concert was a benefit, provides opportunities for local students, by linking artists, writers, musicians, dancers and filmmakers with students from kindergarten to high school, providing workshops and hands-on education. This special night was also an opportunity for Jewel to perform for her own family and relatives, many of whom had never seen her perform live or hadn’t seen her perform since she and her dad were a duo back in the 1980s.

The two shows in Anchorage on August 20 and 21 were also quite special and featured opening solo sets by Jewel’s younger brother, Atz Lee Kilcher. Both of his sets concluded with an epic nearly 10 minute long number called "The Yodeling Death Song" that is one of the strangest and most dramatic things I've heard in some time. Performing on both guitar and upright bass, Atz Lee's songs were quite compelling and we hope to turn you on to some of his original music down the road. Atz Lee was followed by another talented homegrown Alaskan musician, Melissa MItchell, who grew up in the same area as The Kilcher family. To lift a quote about Melissa from one of Jewel’s recent blogs, “She was a great guitar player! I love to see girls who play guitar like a guy- if that makes sense. She was confident and commanded her guitar- I love that! And her voice was sweet and strong, and she wrote everything she sang.” If you’d like to learn more about Melissa, check out her website and MySpace pages at: http://www.myspace.com/homegrownAK

All three concerts featured guest appearances by Jewel’s dad, Atz Kilcher (not to be confused with her brother Atz Lee Kilcher) who performed duets with Jewel as well as a new song with his wife Bonnie. All three shows featured many special moments and were certainly highlights of this year’s touring. So without further ado, here are the setlists for the three Alaska concerts. I’m unable to provide setlists for Melissa Mitchell or Tim Easton (who opened the Homer gig), but Jewel’s setlists are complete and accurate, as are these setlists for Atz Lee’s openers in Anchorage.

If you haven’t already, check out the previous Almost Famous blog with Dave’s insider account of the first night in Anchorage and stay tuned for Brianna’s Almost Famous blog from the second night, which will be posted soon. Alan
