Setting the record straight

Wow! I can't believe my comment on Ty's website got so mangled- and now gossip columns hijacked it and put words in my mouth! Go back to my original blog- I like Melissa and think she's gifted (and a real Texas sweetheart), and I adore Steve-O. My comment had nothing to do with either of them. My comment was on a sports website about a rule I have never seen in any type of competition before. Name another sport where if you can’t compete, they use your score from practice. Can you imagine an Olympic diver who can’t compete for any reason, and so they let them use their practice dives from that day? Or a chess match, for that matter. If Ty were in the same position, I'd still ask the same thing. I am not a mean-spirited person, and I think all my fans know that. Ty and I have fallen in love with all the contestants, and are in awe of how hard they all work. I can tell you that whoever wins this competition will have earned it, as I see firsthand how incredibly hard they all work. So please don't believe what the gossip columns are trying to turn this into. This isn't a catty girl versus girl thing they are trying to make it into- neither I nor Melissa are like that.

The gossip columns are ridiculous, I don't know what people find so interesting about trash talk. I like to read fiction and romance novels myself!
Have a wonderful day Jewel.

It's all good, Jewel. We know you're the genuine article and the real deal. As for Melissa, she couldn't compete in regular competition. Therefore, she should have forfieted. The only reason she was allowed to was to make things fair and even since they permitted Steve-O the same latitude. Injuries happen in any sport and the players and atheletes are taken out of the game and/or competition. That should apply here.
CharlesBlakemore | May 1, 2009
I read what you said and Stevo was given the same courtousy, saying Melissa doesnt desrve the same is wrong. Her fans voted for her and i am hoping she wins..Dancing with the stars is not a sport,so i dont think there is a comparison.Even unfortunately the best dancer doesnt always win and the worst doesnt always get voted off..Some people will vote for someone, just because he or she has a name or is married to one..I thaught it was a mean-spirited thing to say to Melissaa...
Elvis | May 1, 2009
I think it's INCREDIBLY unfair to take practice scores and apply them to the actual scores of the competition. Like you, I agree that no other sport does that. I think it's unfair. HOWEVER, being that this is the 2nd time that this is done, maybe all of the dancers, will take their practices more seriously ... in case that ever happens. But I agree, I don't think that it's right. To touch on Melissa, I love her ... I loved her on the Bachelor .. I LOVE HER .. BUT .. I think it's unfair that she's a part of the competition, because of her dance experience. Yes, many before her have had some type of dancing experience and Ballroom *IS* different, but you have the advantage of coordination .. which makes understanding the moves easier, not really executing them, but understanding them and knowing what you need to do. So I think if anyone has dance experience, they shouldn't be allowed in this competition. In my opinion.
GreenEyedJen | May 1, 2009
Your fans do know ur not a mean spirited person. Tabloids always want to see women hating eachother and so many people feed into the nonsense - obviously. Of course they focused your comment on Melissa and not Steve O...typical. No worries - real fans got ur back :)
Leapbaby | May 1, 2009
Let me add this to the noise. First, this is a competition of popularity; how large a fan base is, the name, and the dancer the star is coupled with. Some people will vote for a star just because of who their professional partner is. I love Cheryl and Gilles is an excellent dancer. But, I look for the best out of the pack. This season is no different. By the way, I have not missed one show since the first season.
So, Melissa received a 21 for her rehersal dance. The rest was from viewer votes. I am confident she drew a lot of sympathy votes along with those who would vote for Tony no matter who his star partner was. Personally, I am shocked Chuck went. He is a musician and with Julianne; a real life couple. Julianne is a pretty, young, sweet "thing" that I am sure a lot of men would vote for no matter what.
The bottom line is simple. The judging happened and the votes cast. Chuck lost even though he scored higher than Melissa. Time to move on to the next show and get over it!
CharlesBlakemore | May 1, 2009
i enjoyed what you wrote about this rule.. i got it.. its just like the gossip channels to grab it and run.. they forget the point and find a battle.. its ok ... love u love ty.. the show is just that ..a show....
myseeley | May 1, 2009
That ridiculous rule will be changed. C'mon...you dance a great practice round under NO pressure...so what's to stop you from passing on the live take (under pressure) and just saying you're "hurt."
If the live segment is that unimportant just tape the whole thing. But if the live segment means anything (and it should) then a contestant's failure to appear "live" must result in a forfeit.
Otherwise the entire "contest" or "competition" is a sham.
EITHER IT IS A LIVE COMPETITION OR IT IS NOT. IT'S TIME FOR THE PRODUCERS TO DECIDE.
Jewel...you told the truth a lot more nicely than I would have.

Jewel, thanks for the update. I knew right from the beginning that you woulld not say anything mean about another person. Having watch all your old interviews and Meet & Greets interviews I have never heard you say a mean thing to anybody and there have been many times that a interviewer has tried to set you up to say a something bad about another singer and you just don't go there. Your question is a fair question. Your fans are behind you 1000%. Go Ty.
daamodt | May 1, 2009
I think this make you realize why it's better to be out of CA lol or maybe write a song about it! Don't worry what your fans will think. We know you would never trash somebody, but i'm scared your fans you were gaining beacause of DWTS,interviews, video blogs, twitter, etc. won't understand it.Thus, you will only have your old fanbase :( ;however we are great! lol
Efesios | May 1, 2009
You have nothing to apologize for, Jewel. You spoke eloquently about the screwed-up DWTS scoring system. There are too many haters involved with this that want to hurt and offend good people. And you are blessed to be one of the good people.
BullGal | May 1, 2009
PEOPLE....this is entertainment television! Why are you all taking this so seriously? It's entertainment! GOOD LORD, look at the prize! It's a flippin' disco ball trophy!!!!! Lighten up a little bit here. Who cares what gossip columnist write? As long as the two people involved, Jewel and Melissa, know that there was nothing said to be mean spirited or berating, who really cares what someone writes? Ignore them. As a Mom of six, I tell the same thing to my kids all the time. This should have never gone beyone a quick conversation between the people involved. Stop giving these gossip columnnists something to write about. By the way, Ty is absolutely adorable :) He's not the best dancer, but I vote for him. This isn't a competition people, it's entertainmment!
Twinsx2plus2 | May 1, 2009
U should apologize to Melissa..... If this was a real competition than you stiff husband wouldn't have made this far. He better be the one to go next coz Lil' Kim, Shawn, Gilles and Meliisa are way better than him. oh and to make matters worst you write "But if I were to be on the show I might change my mind. Hahah!"
I lost all respect for you and Ty.

Dear Jewel, now you're getting to hear from the crazies who live vicariously through other people and get way over-involved in their public performances. I see a few have left a few comments here.
Your tweets and blogs, as well as Ty's are charmingly spontaneous and genuine, but I guess you can't keep that up now that the weirdos are looking and waiting to pounce. Which is a shame, but that's celebrity culture and things are going to get worse from here on as the show reaches fever pitch. It gets really crazy.
Monika | May 1, 2009
It's a shame you have to even explain yourself. Most people know you are completely genuine. Those gossip mongers will do anything to twist words and get a story out there. It's a shame there was no story for them to find with your comments.
Hugs~

Jewel,
No worries honey, becuase your real fans know the real you and we know you wouldn't be mean spirited. This is getting way blown out of proportion! Just like everything else in those gossip columns.
It's a business and they are trying to use popular people and current 'hot shows' to sell magazines and get viewers. By next week we will all forget this story becuase they will move onto thier victim.
I felt the same way you did when they let her use her practice video. It just doesn't seem fair to me.
Thank you for being honest and yourself within your blogs and tweets. The fans that have followed you all these years, like me, will always be there. Because we know the real Jewel has heart the size of Texas!!
Hang in there Jewel! It will all work out in the end.
Good luck to Ty!
Love ya! Vicki
Vicki_Lanka | May 1, 2009
Dear Jewel,
I have been a fan of yours for years and would see you at Java Joe's in OB back in the day. You appear to be a sweet, compassionate, loving person and it really surprised me that you married "rodeo champion". What is there to be proud about wrangling poor, innocent animals? This is a poor demonstration of masculinity. It is so unattractive. Yuck!
Please tell your husband that rodeos are cruel and to stop making a career out of hurting animals.

Jewel you are awesome! Your fans know you meant nothing negative by that comment. It is the truth, no other sports competition does it like that so it is a little hard to understand. I have never watched DWTS until this year,I am watching it simply because of Ty, I am a major fan of the PBR, so when I heard Ty and you were going to be on there I was super excited. Ty has came so far in this. He said from the beginning that he was way out of his comfort zone and look at him now, WOW! He is a major ambassador for the bull riding world. This just goes to show you how strong his army is. Some of the comments on here are just crazy. People thinking Ty needs to stop making a career out of hurting animals, are you kidding me, the bulls in the PBR probably have it better than the cowboys that ride them. I know people are entitled to their own opinion but come on. Tell Ty to keep up the good work and we will be cheering him and voting for him all the way!
Nay | May 1, 2009
i love you and Ty
But i am worried because of what the tabloids have done with this comment it could hurt Ty the next time they tally the scores.
People may be out to get rid of Ty because they are brainwashed by the media.
This is the Alice in wonderland yellow brick road you and Ty embarked back on. Regardless you know that life is all about experiences and learning.
Your life is some lovely art.
Do not let this hurt you too much. I know how sensitive you are and care so much. People will believe what they are told to believe as you see even though you explained yourself people are still saying harsh things. You can not change that.
It comes down to heart seeing past the impressive smoke and mirror show that is the media..
love u always unconditionally
i mean it
and as i watch DWTS i see why you love Ty so much he is a sweetie
jessicamystic | May 1, 2009
I want to compete in a trap shooting competition this coming weekend but can you believe it they won't let me use my practice scores? But I injured my wrist I told them and they didn't care.
It's obvious that DWTS has an agenda.
Al249 | May 1, 2009
My father was a cowboy and I grew up on a ranch in Eastern Colorado, so I know about the core values of cowboys. Ty and most of of the guys on the PBR are an example of those core values. I understood your blog about DWTS and agree with you that if you can't play hurt or "cowboy up", then there is no score. I am a big supporter AND VOTER of Ty on DWTS. We attend the PBR in Tacoma, Nampa, Portland and Mollalla as well as watch all the PBR on VERSUS. Don't take to heart too much some of the catty comments in "People" blog. A lot of people these day construe constructive criticism as hate. YOU WERE RIGHT!!!!!
glindahl | May 1, 2009
Nay,
It's easier to just turn a blind eye and not think about the pain that is unnecessarily inflicted on the animals that are forced to participate in rodeos. The fact is that Rodeos are cruel to animals and there is nothing honorable or masculine about wrangling them. If you think these animals are treated well, would you allow your pet or your child to be wrangled by Ty?
ginger1970 | May 1, 2009
Jewel, don't let the "nuts" coming out of the woodwork get to you. Everyone knows the kind of people you and Ty are so don't worry. Nothing you can do when you are a public figure. They are just a grain of sand. Your fans are behind you..... Lovin watching Ty on DWTS and voting!! ginger salute... Texas fan
volag | May 1, 2009
Hey Ginger,
This blog isn't your platform to discuss animal cruelty. It's about dancing with the stars and Jewel's comments. If you have strong feelings about animal cruelty do something that will change it and do it in the right place. This isn't it. You're opinion is respected and heard, but people are losing your point by doing it here, on a singer's website. Stand up for what you believe in, just stand up in the right place!
Twinsx2plus2 | May 1, 2009
It is thier job to look for stuff to mangle. I havent seen what it is that your are refering to, but I see the way that they do that stuff all the time. I still have one of your early fliers made out to look like a Tabloid gossip cover where you were joking about "Aliens" having put your head on some bikini models body. I knew you had a sense of humor way back then. This sounds like it is like that flier come true. They are trying to put your "head" on the image of someone more Catty than yourself. Don't worry kiddo. Even us NonSickoFans can see through a bit of distortion when it comes up. We here in San Diego have known and seen the True You up close and personal. And we still remember the Sweetheart that we know you to really be.
Gentle King of the Jungle
TenderLion | May 1, 2009
Actually, there is a blog here on the site that addresses animal treatment in regards to the PBR and rodeo. There you can read Jewel's thoughts on the subject and comment on that specific topic. It's several blogs back in the April 7th blog titled "Paso." She addressed that exact topic just a few weeks ago.
MrBB | May 1, 2009
Well... this isn't the Olympics. It's a competition for "entertainment" purposes, and the rules are quite different. These aren't professional dancers, as you would find professional athletes in a sports competition or game. They obviously don't want to send a celebrity home permanently if they are going to be able to dance again the following week, that would really hurt the ratings. I think it's fair, whichever celebrity is in this type of predicament.
PS: Yay Ty, you're doing so well, keep it up!!!
lisa42 | May 1, 2009
I think that this rule poses no problem if the star will be able to compete the following week. Both Melissa and steve-O did not do amazing in the practice (which would have raised some eyebrows). In fact, both time this rule has been used those stars had the lowest judges scores of the week. I don't think that it was an intentional way of getting out of performing. As much as I loved chuck and Julianne it would have been dumb to send one of the best dancers home.
**Also for those who feel that melissa should not even be on the show. i think that is ridiculous. There are performers (singers/rappers/even actors) who have to learn dances to perform at concerts and stuff. It is the same thing. I think if anything melissa is at a disadavantage bc she already has certain dance tendencies that she has to try to erase rather than starting from scratch!
mcoger215 | May 1, 2009
Jewel,
Gossip is gossip. Don't worry about it. You will always have gossip around you because you are smart, kind, generous, open and honest. And let's not forget beautiful on the outside too. People love to attack those traits. Always stand up for what you believe and think and don't look back. They can take it or leave it. If you don't they will run over you. You go Girl!!!

Boy I'll bet Texas is looking really good right about now. In the beginning of theis competition I really had fun reading the blogs on DWTS site, but as the weeks go by the crowd has taken on a lintch mob mentality and is now so fun anymore. Ty's blogs are so fun and he is such a gentleman you can't help but admire him. My Dad and his brothers and one of my bros are cowboys and they are the best. Jewel you were just voicing your own perspective on the issue and were not putting words in Ty's mouth. I can't imagine that he isn't perfectly capable of speaking for himself. You have nothing to apologize for.
cleeone | May 1, 2009
Hi Jewel, I agree with your statement completely!
silversunangel | May 1, 2009
Jewel, the people who vote for Ty and know both of you through your blogs understand that you would never say anything in a mean-spirited way. Don't let the gossip-mongers upset you. Anyone with any sense will realize it's just trouble-makers trying to stir the pot.
As for you, Ginger, before you start pointing fingers at bull riding, you and PETA should do your homework. Those bulls are treated better than most humans. There is no animal cruelty involved whatsoever. If so, I would not be a fan. Those types of comments are what make PETA less than credible in most people's eyes even in those of us who love animals.
LilYellowJacket | May 1, 2009
I don't read those rags anyway. I got what you meant. I think it's a really weird rule and they didn't used to do it when somebody got hurt.
I'm enjoy Ty's blog, your blog and your Twittering. Keep it up.
BTW, you, like anybody else, are entitled to your opinion even if you should (and you aren't) go again popular opinion.

Only one thing i beleive she owes ABC and Melissa and Tony and apology....
Elvis | May 1, 2009
I just want to say that I TOTALLY agree with the statement that if you can't compete, you shouldn't get a score. I have never seen any type of competition where you could use a practice to compete due to injury. I've always known it that you were disqualified if you could not actually do the required performance for competition.
gatormom | May 1, 2009
Hi Jewel:

Gossip magazines are just that GOSSIP SHIT and even though I guess you don´tpay them attention I just say you the same... Don´t do it, that´s what they are looking for. Someone who fall with her/his head inside of their words and can swallow him/her down with their lies!

And I am SOOOOOO excited that I received my autographed LULLABY CD today! Yeah!

I agree with many others that it is strange that DWS changed the rules this year on the fly. I think perhaps because of your injury and Nancy O'Dell, then followed closely by Woz and Steve-O, they tried to find a way to fill air time. Nonetheless, if a contestant is unable to compete, they withdraw. That's how competitions are conducted. I'm sorry that your viewers feel differently. And not that it makes any difference one way or another, I voted for TY because of his heart and his spirit.
sistersnoop | May 1, 2009
I just wanted to say I said this Tuesday night to my mother. I totally think its outrageous that a person was booted off who actually danced over a person who is INJURED and didnt even preform (and chances are wont be doin much this week either)
So thank you for saying what I was trying to say!

Jewel I am sorry there are some people out on the boards that do not understand. I have been checking the boards.I have to tell you we have started a board on dwts called "The We're Blind and Crazy for Ty Fanclub Office". It is a great board and we are keeping everything positive. We have people also holding offices. LOL From President all the way down to me Reporter of Jewel News and Bump Manager for Ty's boards.
I have to confess I do follow one person on the boards. Name is Ripper7777. I have to confess I follow him.He (She) is not very nice, but I do keep it positive, because that what we all think Ty and you would want it. We all respect you and Ty.
We may have opened a restaurant, we have food, drink, put our dogs in K-9 army for Ty. LOL We want it to be fun. We keep it positive. :o) Just want you to know we love you and Ty.

Hey! I saw that Blind and Crazy for Ty fan club over there on the dwts board. At first I was a little bit suspicious, after reading a few entries they are sorta funny. I went over and read your comment in question just to see what all the fuss was about. Made sense to me. If I get injured in Motorcycle racing, nobody is going to use my timed practice run against those in the actual race. Can you see them doing that in the Indy 500? People would start an uproar!
I'm just surfin' here for the first time. Nice site.
Happy Surfin'

Jewel:
I understood your blog on the PBR site and agreed with your statement. I agree with your clarification. There was nothing mean spirited about either. However, the show this season has produced some fanatical fans that are overly sensitive and protective of their girl. Just brush it off. Don't pay any attention to it.
Take care, enjoy the weekend, tell Ty to relax and have fun Monday night and let him know my votes are going his way.
Cheers.
YellowCatTail | May 1, 2009
Jewel, we have a saying in our family that says..... Those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
Those of us who have come to love and respect you and your integrity know that you are not a mean spirited person. Those who do not know that are really missing out on a really amazing person. Your fans will stand behind you all the way, and we hope that helps you to know.
We love you and look forward to more of your amazing music and hopefully more shows.

Also, this is a blog for fans of Jewel (and by association for Ty) so why slam them? That is not why the rest of us are here, we are here to support and follow someone we respect and want to get to know as well as we can in this forum. So, I am sure there are some "hate sites" out there that may appreciate your hateful words more than the rest of us do. So, bye for now.

Hey Jewel,
It's unfortunate things became twisted like this. You were just giving your opinion which we are all entitled to do. You, Ty, & Chelsie will have to ignore all the hullabaloo being made over this and just go out and dance. We will be there to vote in full force.
petmarys | May 2, 2009
I love Melissa and is my favorite, the only problem i seee with your comment, you could have brought it up when Stevo received the same treatment..It just seems now it is directed intentional or not towards Melissa, because she benefited from the rule...Secondly this is not a sporting event..
Elvis | May 2, 2009
I agree with you 100 percent, Jewel. Just a little note, off topic. I was going to vote for the best dancer tonight, but when Ty pulled you up and kissed you, that did it for me. He is a very good dancer, much improved, but most of all he is a rarity these days in that he is a true gentleman. He has all the qualities I would want in a husband if I were young and looking, which I'm not. May God bless your marriage and provide with many children. Coming from you guys they would be smart, healthy, active, polite and good-looking. Also, anyone call tell you are a good person, not at all catty or vindictive.
coneyann | May 4, 2009
Jewel,
I totally agree with you. I told my husband when they did it for Steve-O that he should automatically be disqualified. I have been in many music competitions & in all the times that I have competed if you couldn't be there to compete you were automatically disqualified. I'm glad that someone came forward & said it. As far as all the comments about the animals being abused in Rodeos I know that is total lies. There is nothing abusive about bull riding/wrangling. Ty can come over any day & wrangle my cats (they probably deserve it). I have been giving ty most of my votes. He has come a long way since the beginning. I can see why you fell in love with him he has such a cute personality. Don't listen to any of the nay-sayers keep doing what you're doing you both are genuine people.
Julespach | May 4, 2009
I think what you said was correct, but I think it's one of those "vicious circles" sort of things. Do you let them compete the next week or don't you? Yes, they will be healthy enough to dance the following week, but is it fair to the show the other dancers and the injured dancer to base a score on a rehearsal? I know on So You Think You Can Dance they had a similar situation a couple seasons ago where a dancer couldn't compete. That show is a little different because their bottom 3 have to dance to be saved every week and this girl was automatically put in the bottom 3. Maybe DWTS should do something like that? And I completely understood you were having issues with the show and not Melissa herself. Anyone who missed that has a quick temper and even quicker fingers on the keyboard. Oh well, what can you do, right? You and Ty are wonderful people and I am glad to be a fan of both of you.
SummerJ | May 5, 2009
I guess Melissa's three 10's did the job, and may stop the catty comments. I was shocked to hear the protest, when this has been done previously. Truth is in the pudding...dark chocolate. Ty's a nice guy, but can't dance. Hurray for Tony & Melissa. By, Ty.
doggitsy | May 5, 2009
Sorry, but I don't think any amount of trying to justify or explain yourself will help. I really, really dug your music and your whole vibe. But those comments, in any context, were made to cast doubt on someone's right to be in the show. There was no point to it other than to try to make someone else look weak and like they shouldn't be on the show. You came off insecure, jealous, bitter, and mean. I'm rooting for Melissa now.
harmrose | May 5, 2009
Major elitest attitude! Guess what Jewel..cowboys are not the only tough people out there. Beautiful young woman like Melissa or even rough around the edges rehab survivors like Steve-O can be pretty darn tough too. It's a TV show about dancing....get over it yourself already. I think you act like you are better than everyone else somehow and you know what? You aren't. BYE TY! YOUR DANCING STINKS!

Unbelievable! These haters need to get a life! I think it's wierd how they go on your fan web site, to diss you. (Especially, the ones who do it over and over.) Makes you wonder about their mental status. Obviously, they're jealous, negative, and must lead very boring lives. I agree with the 99% of people who support you both, Jewel and Ty. Jewel, you are a talent beyond words! Ty, your awards and tenacity speak for themselves! PETA freaks and pathetic people, check yourselves in the mirror! Carry on Murrays...We're behind you all the way!
