Heartbreaking News from Jewel..
Posted in From Jewel on March 5, 2009
Well, as many of you know I have been having trouble with my knees after rehearsing long hours for Dancing With The Stars. The doctors thought I had tendonitis, but when I wasn't feeling better after some rest, I decided to get an MRI. When I heard the results I was in utter disbelief. The doctors told me that not one, but both of my legs were fractured!! He said my left one was particularly bad, and that I had to not only stop dancing, but stop walking and use crutches!!! He said I had just over done it with the rehearsals and training over the past few weeks and so my muscles became fatigued and transferred the overload of stress to the bones in my leg - causing the stress fractures! He says that type of injury can happen when athletes step up the amount or intensity of their training. Typical me- I throw myself 1000% into anything I do- that's how I went from being homeless to where I am today- but I just had no idea I could over-do dancing!
Shock does not begin to describe it. I am heartbroken to say I will not be competing in this season of Dancing With the Stars. I'm sad I won't get to go through the rest of the experience competing with my husband, Ty. I don't really know what to say. I am sad and mad and disappointed and just blown away at all that has happened. I also feel particularly upset for my partner Dmitry. This is his first season on the show and he put so much work and thoughtful effort into training me. I really wanted America to see what a great dancer, choreographer and teacher he is. This wasn't the way I wanted to go, but my health must come first. And so it is with regret I will not be able to compete this season, but I will be there to cheer my husband on every step of the way- he will just have to dance for the both of us now!
The good news is that my doctors say with rest and care, I will recover completely with no long-term damage. I hope I will be able to come back and compete on the show another season after my injury heals and get the chance to team up with Dmitry once again to show America our cha-cha! xxj

another fellow Texan ;)
I was planning on cheering and voting for both you and Ty but now will just be voting for Ty! So he'll have to step up his game to dance for both of you :)
I'm sorry you won't be competing but, there will be another season, may be even next season? At least you're heal completely and be able to Cha Cha again!
I am so sad to hear about that. Really that was the reason I was going to watch DWTS this season. But I will tune in to cheer on you husband. Please take care of yourself. I'm glad the doctors caught it so that you won't have permanent disability. Take care, and please do a concert in LA or the OC while you're recouperating (on a stool, of course.)
Hopefully we'll get to see you and Dmitry next season.
Peace & good health to you and Ty.

When things like this happen, I can't help but go towards the teaching and healing words of surrendering to what it is.
*
It's as if the more difficult a situation is, the intensity of what we learn from it is equally balanced out. Soooo much healing energy I am sending your way Jewel, get ready Jewel here it comes*******

acupuncture offer still stands...
I'm sure you are disappointed because
you seemed so exited about dancing.
I guess the rest is best now...
Don't be sad though...
I'm sure you know your fans adore you
and would carry you to the stage if they
had to...
and in the true Buddhist fashion...
as you look around you...
You know...
No matter what problem you may face...
it could always be worse.
Right?
PS. We all know you would've won anyway ;)

Just one thing... next time "TAKE IT EASIER!!!!" learn from this injury an try to face it with calm next time jeje I know it´s hard ;)
What "really" matters are YOUR KNEES!
And I pesonally love you singer songwriter part more than a poor injury girl who is sad for can´t participate on the show... So show us your foce again and be happy to not have to wait for start finally a family and focus on your lullaby album ;)
You have it all, Jewel. Love, food, joy and calmness ;)
LOVE blessed you and take good care
If you get to come back next year, you'll have all that time to practice with Ty until then. Like he said, slow and steady.
But by then, you could be dancing with a baby.
Good luck with whatever comes your way.
You'll always be in our thoughts.
Take care,
Jay

Please get checked for early onset osteoporosis. It is extremely rare for someone of your age to fracture both legs unless he/she is involved in a serious accident (like a motorcycle crash). To your health!

truth is stranger then fiction.. maybe or is it .. your truth is better then any fiction
I told you along with other fans to take it easy! If you won't listen to your husband, then at least listen to your fans. I'm so sorry for your
injuries. I don't want you to suffer further, so PLEASE TAKE IT EASY! Also, you DON'T have to show up at every performance if you're in pain. We KNOW you'll be watching at home and do know we'll be rootin' for Ty as well! You and Nancy are the only reasons I would've watched DWTS this season as it has become such a drag these past seasons. You were the HOPE and LIFE of the show
and would've brought back the excitement it had during it's first run. Thank you so much just the same for your hard work and dedication! Get more calcium and Vit D!
Please come back next season. I never really expected you to have accepted if offered, knowing your concerts and songwriting would be compromised for 3 months. Just REST and know you're
loved...BIG TIME!
Well miss jewel, if you didn't feel loved before...i hope that you do now. If you don't now, I can't imagine what it would take.
Never watched DWTS and would only have watched to see you kick butt BUT now I might peak to see Ty dance. He's got a bull's set to do go through with it. I can't think of anything I could do to get my husband to be on the show - not one thing.
Dancing twists your knees different than running - you must have some threshold for pain - the good and the bad of it.
I hope you heal quickly and are comfortable.
Wasn't meant to be! Can't tell you why...
Take care.
take care
Kiera
Once you're healed, you and Ty will not get to do some pretty cool dances together!
Get better soon Jewel! Take care we love you xx
Take it easy!!!

Down the road in Lampasas!!
So sorry to hear about your injury.I was at your show last night at San Manuel...what a great show! I loved the setlist, and that you took requests!I loved to hear your stories and your answers to the questions people asked. Overall a very nice show...although it was a far drive for me I thought it was totally worth it. Can't wait to see you at Hollywood Bowl.
OK so as soon as I heard you and Ty were going to be on DWTS, I was like YES!!! Something to watch!!! I was really excited to see you both dance! I told my husband that I hoped that when it got to the end it would be just You vs Ty!!! I thought heck ya that'd be awesome!
Well I'm really sorry to hear that you had gotten hurt. Its a real bummer for the show bc i'm sure a lot of people would be watching just for you!!!
Everything happens for a reason right?!!! Not really sure why the good lord wouldn't want you in it! We'll miss you~
Keep your spirits high! And get some well deserved R and R while you route Ty on!!!

"ICE" Season 2 of Coyote Ugly on CMT!
I'll be routing for Ty, and still can not wait to watch the show on monday night.
take care Jewel.
Be careful with your knees, you only get two free ones. Keep in the best of health- and keep your bone strength and calcium up. Once you start making a baby they leach the calcium right out of you.
My best frien's father died just yesterday morning from cancer, but I decided to still go to the concert for a pick-me-up, but then you broke out "Violet Eyes." Water works, but thanks for touching my heart. I wish I could take that song to my friend this weekend. Hope you'll put it out soon.
Your voice was amazing!! Heal fast.
sincerely,
vincent

Sorry to hear the injury was more serious than first thought. Disappointing? Yes, but gotta be a sliver lining somewhere...
I must admit i wasn't keen on watching the show, but for YOU of course!!
How 'bout the DWTS folks letcha sing a song or 2? Now that would be sweet justice. Also you'll have some extra time for writing/composing.
Anywayz, you are in my thoughts; wishing you a speedy recovery and we all know you'll be back and an even stronger woman for it.

Jewel has evolved since pieces and changed where every single album has a different sound. She has given her fans different music for the changes in her life and in our world as well. What other artist has gone out of their comfort zone to create different albums for different moods like she has? I can't think of one. If you don't like it, that is certainly your opinion and everyone has one...
This is not naivity speaking - just a differing opinion and I hate to see bashing on this website. If you don't like the new music, find a new idol - there will be plenty of us left who still do.
You shouldn't be disappointed about "Dancing" - sounds like you put everything you had into it. Be proud & stand tall (even if that means you have to use the crutches for support)!
(Wasn't like dancing in High School, eh?)
As long as we never lose the music you share with us.
Tony
Who the hell are these people making these remarks? The bigger question is...Where the hell have they been, and how can you call yourselves TRUE Jewel fans?
I mean, Hello, are you not aware she had a CD that debuted at #1 on the Country Charts last year? A single called "Stronger Woman" that broke the Top 15 on the Country Billboard Charts? Her CD knocked Taylor Swift out of the Number one spot for Christ sakes!!!
How more RELEVANT can she be? But, then again, you are probably one of those fans, that screams out "Hands" or "Meant For You" when she takes requests at her concert. Unaware that she has had 5 albums since Pieces of You and Spirit.
Look, what it boils down to is that if you are not pushing yourself as an artist, your standing still.
Would you rather see her on DWTS or Shit Smearing Crazy like Britney was? LOL
I am so glad that you wrote this last entry b/c it finally clarified exactly where you were coming from and it sounded more like criticism (which can be constructive) as opposed to bashing. If you listen to Good Bye Alice in Wonderland, Jewel addresses exactly what you speak of. Her career has spanned from her being a teenager to her mid thirties - what person can look back in that time frame and say they didn't make any choices they wished they hadn't? Choices are rarely clearly right or wrong...one choice just leads to another. Was 0304 my favorite album by Jewel? Certainly not but the next album that she released was nothing like it either so to say she continued on a path and lost all of the fans she had established with Pieces of You and Spirit, I feel is naive.
Take care! Take a good rest, because later on you might regret it. I am now suffering from a broken leg, from 4 and a half years ago. My nerve has died and didn't recover. So please be carefull that you recover for 100%. Than you can do this also for 1000%!
Lots of love!
Paula
There's no secret about 0304. Jewel said herself that it was the last album she did under contract with Atlantic Records. They wanted dance/Pop, so she gave it to them, with her spin. She used an accordian for christs sake, and had a number hit with it! C'mon, now give me break.
I agree that Spirit was simply an amazing album. But 0304 has it place. As does, This Way, Alice In Wonderland, and Perfectly Clear.
But look, 0304 was done in 2004....you need to move on.
And say what you want my fair weather fan, I think Jewel is a lyrical genius. I love, and own, ALL of her albums.
Naive? Maybe. Devoted? Absolutely!
Keep mixing it up, doing fun reality shows, touring, dancing and having fun being a "learning junkie!" Don't listen to this negativity. Cos we love everything you do since your San Diego days :)
Don't you people have anything better to do than to come on Jewel's site and bash her?! Goodness....
and its a shame that happened to you!
I hope you get better soon!!
:)
saying her album "Sucks Dirty Ass" and calling us un-intelligent sycophants neither makes you superior or appreciated....but keep trying.
I had to come back and let another comment.
After reading some other comments I was really sad and I think I felt the same way (well... you surely felt it worser) as you. About all this bashing at you.
I won´t start a fight in here and won´t anser any provocation, but I just wanna say that "Bashing" is not the same as a "constructive point of view".
Because you can say you don´t like something, but there should die any other comment.
Now again to you Jewel. I hope your legs get well soon!!!
I know a lot of fractures because of the football players of my team, they ever get hurt and they have to take it easy for some months. But they ever recover, so HAVE HOPE!!!
I have see a video in YouTube of you singing with Chelsie "Hands", so sweet!!!
Let George and Ty make you some cresses, that with love you will be sooner standing without crutches!!!
LOVE blessed you, my dear!!!
P.S. Let me say to you that I tottaly get 0304 and the lyrics are so DAMN clever!
Was looking forward to the competition between you & Ty.
Saw you for the first time last summer when you were with the Paisley tour in Holmdel, NJ. Please return to the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ.
But I'm glad to hear u will have not permanent injuries.
Good luck!!
We've been getting some mail requesting some comments be removed by our moderator team, so I just want to reply on it. Opinions both positive and negative are welcome here. The only comments ever removed have fallen into 3 basic categories-----1)if a site member disrespects other site members with insults or attacks of a personal or religious nature.----2)If incorrect information is posted on tour dates, contests, merchandise, etc.-----3) if multiple posts contain the same content over and over. This usually happens by mistake (submit button frenzy) but has occurred out of anger a few times.----- Otherwise, as long as you reasonably respect each other and generally stay on topic, opinions and comments both positive and negative are welcome in the blogs and the message boards. I think a lot of us have been confused and perhaps even felt betrayed by some of the choices Jewel has made. But some people actually grow up and mature from the time they are a teenager until their 30's. Although different from what we were hoping for, 0304 was a great album. It took me a little while to warn up to Alice, but now I think it is great.
Dancing on the show was a great opportunity to do something fun. While she wants her work to be successful, I highly doubt Jewel is desperate for popularity. And yes, she is allowed to learn a new art form whenever she pleases. I think most of us were excited to see her dance. She would be great!
You are welcome here like everyone else, but you just reminded us of one thing I neglected to mention in my previous comment. One cannot create/have a pornographic avatar here. Beyond the obvious respect for others issue, this is an all ages site and it will not be tolerated. We see you've just changed it so yours is ok again, but if you defy that rule again or test the limits on that issue, all your posts will indeed be nuked.
"Now you're doing Dancing For Relevance and you don't give a shit anymore. Your music sucks on dirty ass."
This is way beyond constructive criticism and I feel it is bashing. If you don't want to be called a "jewel basher" perhaps you should choose what you post more carefully.
Elvis plays devil's advocate all of the time and it certainly gets discussions going but this post quoted above crossed a line that made it offensive.
So sorry you hurt yourself Jewel. I hope you're better soon and get to come back to go DWTS next season!
What she said was, She's been criticized her whole career, and that she don't care what you or any other critic thinks. She makes music and career choices that follow her core values, and that make her heart sing. If you like fine. If you don't, PITY! I will repeat, AGAIN, that 0304 was released 4 YEARS AGO!!! You need to get over it.
Now, can we please move past this? This topic is sooooo done. And I'm soooo over you two.
Go blog about Sinead O'Connor. She's Irish, isn't she?
