Merle Haggard

So, if you dont already know, im a HUGE Merle Haggard fan. Have been since i was a kid. Hes just one of the finest songwriters and singers ever, in my opinion. Very under appreciated. He wrote somthing like 49 of his own #1 hits!!!!!! I can't tell you how amazing that is. And he is very well steeped in american classic songbook standards and jazz, and knowing that, when you listen to his songs, you can hear the craftmanship in the way he builds melodies. I think the world of him. I was lucky enough to sing with him on his album of #'1's - and also then on a vegas pay per view special, and on the CMA's back in 1999 or 2000... But I haven't seen him sense - so i was excited the other day to realize we would be in nashville the same day. I went to a lunch he was having for a green charity called Green Train, and i got to visit with him, and his lovely wife Teresa. I asked if he had written anything lately, and he said he wrote one he liked, 2 weeks ago, called "Love is Always Pretty When it's New".... And he leaned over and sang it right then. It was amazing. It sounded less like a country song, and more like a classic Standard - it was clever and clean and even a little cerbic at the hook. Dear Lord, i hope i write that well later in my life. He said i could cut it if I like, and that he'd cut one of mine. Merle! Dont joke with a gal! Id love to cut one of his songs - and i have been planning an album of original "standards" type stuff, so the song would fit perfect. But i cant imagine writing a song good enough for him to cut! His wife Teresa was so sweet- as Merle sang the words, she knew every one and her lips moved quietly in perfect time as she sang along under her breath- beaming with pride- it was really sweet. You could tell she really adores him.
That night Ty and i caught his show at the Ryman and he sang great- and his 15 yr old son played guitar in the band. cool. It was great to hear him sing all the hits i grew up listening to. I was reminded of how a lyric from Big City made me write a similar lyric in Who will save your soul- its the line where he says "so-called social security" and then i wrote my line "social security wont pay your bills" as homage to that line.... Anyway... I liked the show, and it was fun to see and od school concert that was just about great songs and great singing, in a room that was small enough to hear everything.

I am also so glad that you decided to tour this summer. I will be at your concert on Saturday, July 5 at Red Robin Show Theatre. Hope you have a great time here in Vancouver. See you soon...
Negar :)
I am a logetime fan; All the way from your first album. I admire and relate to your history. I know the difficulties of working with others not grounded (Atlantic) and understand the leep you are taking with your new enterprise. The hardest work you can muster will make you happy and fullfilled (professionally). Your meeting with Haggard is proof. You can use your experiences to boot your success. I never heard your duet with Mr. Haggard until I happended upon this website, and it brought me to You Tube. It was lovely, although you seemed at awe.
My wife bought me your new album for father's day even though our children are all animals. Your lyrics; they often make me say, yes she is so right, or, that is cleaver of her.
Unfortunately I'll be away in July when you will be in Connecticut. Too bad, my loss. Keep the faith kid.
Best Regards,
A big fan
I just turned him on to your music and he loves it also.
Don't forget that many of us Canadians are big fans also.
Keep up the great stuff and the tradition.

Like so many on this site I have been a fan from the beginning. I remember "Who Will Save Your Soul" as a Buzz Clip on MTV. I instantly loved the song. I love your style and grace. When my husband and I met, I was listening your music all the time. Now he writes and plays. You are an inspiration to him. He used to sing our daughter to sleep playing and singing your songs. She is now 10 years old. She has always known your songs and your voice. I have never seen you in concert, but I hope you will come to Tulsa, OK to our new arena. We did see Austin City Limits a while back and were AMAZED at how truely talented you are. We are fans of all kinds of music but you will Always be our fav. Thanks for being you!!!

Thank you for sharing about the videos with Merle, for a while it was just picutures of Merle and you with audio. I noticed when Merle introduced you, you were sitting in the audience, did they know who you were? Also, I love your version of Saint Louis Blues on youtube as well. I hope to be at the show in Louisville on the 16th of August.

More than just being a class of songs, I think it shows that you are now accepted on the Nashville Skyline.

There are times when the legitimate fascination for another's life crosses the boundary into morbidity; you are way across the line.
I am giving you a clear signal:
Dim your lights.
I have to laugh at people who think that visionary sex is more divine than art music or exalted poetry.

Falling back in good order.

Sex is awesome, however, there is more to life than just that. if spiritual growth was centered around just good sex, then the swingers would have the upper hand. which is not something i find to be true. art and poetry remind us of the greater things of life. the question is what is the center from which you speak.
Is Torah Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, or Paradise Eternal?
Would you cut a track in the air with the Covering Cherub?
Leontes
let me guess. .
Paradise Lost.
i think i still have some things to learn.
You'd like Paradise Regained. It's very today.
oh paradise regained author?
